Saw Mr George Turnbull out walking last evening – he is out walking most days really, but this time I stopped to chat with him. George is the oldest living ex rider from the Buck’s Hill Scramble days and will turn 98 in July this year. Walking (with a frame) and still sharp as, at his age is fairly remarkable in my opinion. George bought a new Ariel Red Hunter from Malcolm Motorcycles in Mount Gambier and fitted a sidecar and went racing, often with another local legend John (Wilky) Wilkinson as his co-rider (passenger) competing in Mount Gambier Motor Cycle and Light Car Club events. George is still living independently at Woodlands Grove, Mount Gambier. Didn’t get a photo last night, but George still looks as good as in this 2019 photo. First photo, George leads Les von Einem, second photo George with Wilky – both at Bucks Hill c1948.
