When the Borderline Speedway opened in Mount Gambier in 1957, many Mount Gambier Motor Cycle and Light Car Club members competed in Solo and Sidecar races. Bikes were generally standard road bikes modified slightly for track use, as from being used in Scrambles. Bruce Fox created a lot of interest when in March 1957 he bought a Speedway Jap to ride at the track, but It was not until much later that a crop of young local riders graced the Borderline track on designated Speedway bikes such as the Jawa. Wayne Stanley Kerslake (Stan) was one of those daring young men and it was sad to note this week that he had passed away at the age of 65. Duncan Morrison was one of the 4 riders in the accompanying picture and said they all had Jawas and competition was very close “and any of us could win on our night – Stan was a nice clean rider you could trust to race with.” The riders are from left to right: Steve Fatchen (dec) Duncan Morrison, Brett Saunders and the late Stan Kerslake. The Jawa is Duncan Morrisons. Brett Saunders went to England to follow his dream. RIP Stan Kerslake
