Today is the 92nd Birthday of one of the early Mount Gambier Motor Cycle and Light Car Club members, Harry Vause.
Harry is the only remaining member of the trio that, in late 1951, walked a 40 acre rough bush block/worked out quarry site with Frank McNamara, to check if it had potential as a road race circuit. The other 2 were Laurie Fox and Maurie von Einem. Frank made an offer for the Club to consider, so a report was given to a general meeting and a Club inspection followed. The rest is history and Mac Park is now a premier road race circuit in Australia.
Harry enjoyed riding on the road on an Ariel Red Hunter with Dusting sidecar and competed on the Borderline Speedway and in dirt racing etc, on a Compy Matchless he bought from Laurie Fox. Harry, a mechanic, was well known as an RAA serviceman for OG Roberts. His mechanical skills were also put to use in the development of Mac Park circuit too, as he helped get the General; Stuart army tank going and then drove it on many occasions forming the road race circuit. Happy Birthday, Harry!
